SCENIC HA GIANG DIRT BIKE TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1: Hanoi – Nghia Lo (~250 km, ~7 h)

Today marks the beginning of your Scenic Ha Giang Dirt Bike Tour, an unforgettable Vietnam dirt bike adventure through the country’s most spectacular mountain landscapes. Before leaving Hanoi, we provide a comprehensive rider briefing covering Vietnamese traffic conditions, tour safety, and the hand signals used by your guide throughout the trip. We normally depart at around 9:30 a.m., after the morning rush hour, making it easier and safer to leave the city.

Before setting off, we spend about 30 minutes inspecting every motorcycle and making sure all essential tools, spare parts, and riding equipment are ready. Once everything is checked, we leave Hanoi by following quiet roads along the Red River to Son Tay before turning northwest toward the magnificent Hoang Lien Mountain Range.

The ride from Hanoi to Thanh Son is mostly flat and relaxed, providing a comfortable introduction to riding in Vietnam. From Thanh Son through Thu Cuc and Ba Khe, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic as the road twists along the foothills of the Hoang Lien Range. Expect enjoyable curves, beautiful mountain views, and a peaceful countryside atmosphere with very little traffic.

By late afternoon, we reach Nghia Lo, a charming mountain town surrounded by rice fields and rolling hills. It is an ideal place to unwind after the first day’s ride, enjoy authentic local cuisine, and prepare for the incredible roads and breathtaking scenery that await on the rest of this Ha Giang dirt bike tour.

Day 2: Nghia Lo – Than Uyen (~180 km, ~5 h)

The day begins on wild, bumpy mountain roads, with the legendary Lung Lo Pass providing the first riding challenge. As the route climbs higher, you tackle the spectacular Khau Pha Pass, one of the highest and most scenic mountain passes in Northern Vietnam. Twisting roads, dramatic elevation changes, and endless curves make this an unforgettable day for every adventure rider.

The journey continues through the magnificent Mu Cang Chai mountain range, whose peaks rise almost as high as Fansipan, the highest mountain in Vietnam. From the summit, you’ll enjoy one of the most breathtaking panoramas in the country, overlooking endless rice terraces, deep valleys, and rugged mountains. Although the ride is demanding, the incredible scenery makes every kilometre worthwhile. For many riders, this is one of the absolute highlights of the Scenic Ha Giang Dirt Bike Tour.

Overnight in a hotel.

Day 3: Than Uyen – Sapa (~140 km, ~5 h)

Today is another spectacular day riding the roof roads of Northern Vietnam, with magnificent views toward Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina. The route winds through breathtaking mountain scenery, offering a perfect combination of sweeping curves, fresh mountain air, and unforgettable landscapes.

The Than Uyen region is home to the Flower H’mong and Dao ethnic communities, whose traditional villages and colourful culture add a unique dimension to the journey. From here, we ride towards Sapa, following around 100 km of easy back roads before joining a scenic 40 km mountain highway for the final approach. The changing landscapes make this a relaxing yet rewarding day on the Scenic Ha Giang Dirt Bike Tour.

Overnight in Sapa, one of Vietnam’s most famous mountain destinations. Surrounded by spectacular valleys, terraced rice fields, and ethnic minority villages, Sapa’s unique charm quickly explains why it remains one of the country’s most popular places to visit.

Day 4: Sapa – Bac Ha (~100 km, ~3 h)

The ride from Sapa to Bac Ha takes around 3 hours, offering a beautiful journey through the mountains of Northern Vietnam. We descend from Sapa to Lao Cai (approximately 34 km), a border city where you can stop to take memorable photos with China visible in the background.

After lunch, we continue riding towards Bac Ha (around 70 km) on a scenic mountain road surrounded by impressive landscapes, rolling hills, and peaceful villages. This route provides a great opportunity to experience the authentic beauty of the northwest highlands away from the busy tourist areas.

Overnight in Bac Ha, a charming mountain town famous for its colourful ethnic culture and traditional markets, making it a perfect stop on the Scenic Ha Giang Dirt Bike Tour.

Day 5: Bac Ha – Ha Giang (~200 km, ~6 h)

After breakfast, we continue our Scenic Ha Giang Dirt Bike Tour by riding on remote mountain tracks and quiet back roads towards Xin Man. This section offers some of the most enjoyable riding of the journey, with winding trails, peaceful villages, and spectacular views across the rugged mountains of Northern Vietnam.

We leave the busy routes behind and explore lesser-travelled roads where you can experience the true beauty of the region. The combination of scenic mountain landscapes, challenging tracks, and authentic local life makes this one of the most memorable parts of the Ha Giang dirt bike adventure.

Later in the day, we join the main road towards Ha Giang City, where we stop for the night. After a relaxing evening, you will be fully prepared for the next day’s epic mountain ride through Ha Giang, featuring some of the most dramatic scenery and exciting roads in Vietnam.

Day 6: Ha Giang – Dong Van (~180 km, ~6 h)

After breakfast, we continue our Scenic Ha Giang Dirt Bike Tour on small and challenging mountain roads that are incredibly beautiful and full of surprises. Today takes us deep into the land of colourful ethnic minority communities, where dramatic landscapes and authentic local life combine to create what many riders consider the best riding day of the entire expedition.

Our route leads us to the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of the most spectacular mountain passes in Vietnam. From the top, you can admire endless layers of cloudy mountain ranges and the breathtaking Nho Que River winding through the deep valley below. We continue riding along thrilling zig-zag mountain tracks towards Dong Van, a remote highland town surrounded by some of the most impressive scenery in Ha Giang.

Along the way, you will meet hardworking local people who have adapted to life among the rocky mountains. Their determination and traditional way of living are truly inspiring. After arriving in Dong Van, there is time to explore the ancient streets, where traditional H’mong houses made from clay bricks and topped with tiled roofs have stood for generations.

When we arrive at the hotel, please provide your original passport to the guide. As Dong Van is located in a sensitive border area, a local border permit is required for overnight stays.

Day 7: Dong Van – Bao Lac (~120 km, ~3 h)

You have a full or half morning to explore the charming town of Dong Van, a remote highland destination surrounded by spectacular limestone mountains and unique ethnic minority culture. Take your time to walk through the old streets, visit local markets, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere before continuing the Scenic Ha Giang Dirt Bike Tour.

Leaving Dong Van, we follow a newly built mountain road towards Bao Lac, with some of the most breathtaking scenery in Vietnam. The slower riding pace allows you to fully appreciate the dramatic landscapes, towering peaks, deep valleys, and remote villages along the way. Every corner reveals another unforgettable view of the wild Ha Giang province.

We continue crossing the untouched regions of this legendary mountain area before arriving in Bao Lac, a small town known as an important cultural crossroads of Northeast Vietnam. Home to many different ethnic communities, Bao Lac becomes especially vibrant every Sunday when people from both sides of the border gather at the famous local market to trade goods and share their traditional culture.

Overnight in Bao Lac.

Day 8: Bao Lac – Cao Bang (~160 km, ~5 h)

Today offers another spectacular section of the Scenic Ha Giang Dirt Bike Tour as we ride from Bao Lac to Cao Bang through remote mountain roads and hidden off-road tracks. Leaving the high mountain ranges behind, we gradually descend into the lower valleys and the beautiful landscapes surrounding Cao Bang province.

The route follows many small roads and quiet trails, providing an authentic Northern Vietnam motorbike adventure away from the busy tourist routes. Some sections can be rough and challenging, but the combination of exciting riding, peaceful villages, and stunning mountain scenery makes every moment rewarding.

As we approach Cao Bang City, the landscape changes from dramatic high mountains to greener valleys and rolling hills. Upon arrival, we relax at a comfortable hotel located near the scenic Bang Giang River, a perfect place to rest and prepare for the next unforgettable day of the journey.

Day 9: Cao Bang – Ban Gioc Waterfalls – Quang Uyen (~130 km, ~2 h)

After obtaining the required permission from the border police, we continue our Scenic Ha Giang Dirt Bike Tour through spectacular mountain landscapes towards Ban Gioc Waterfall, one of the most impressive natural wonders in Vietnam. The journey itself is unforgettable, with peaceful roads, dramatic limestone mountains, and breathtaking countryside views along the way.

Weather conditions permitting, you can even swim close to the base of the falls, where the water drops from nearly 50 metres high into the emerald river below. Ban Gioc Waterfall is especially beautiful during the rainy season, typically from June to October, when the water flow is at its most powerful and spectacular.

After exploring the waterfall, we continue riding for about one more hour to the beautiful village of Quang Hoa, located in the heart of a peaceful mountain valley. This area is home to the Nung An ethnic community, where traditional culture and rural mountain life remain well preserved.

Tonight, we stay at a local homestay hosted by our friend’s family. The hostess is not only warm and welcoming but also an excellent cook. Many riders consider her homemade dishes to be among the best meals of the entire Vietnam dirt bike tour, offering a true taste of local hospitality and authentic cuisine.

Day 10: Quang Hoa – Lang Son (~150 km, ~5 h)

Today we leave Quang Hoa and continue our Scenic Ha Giang Dirt Bike Tour towards Lang Son, one of the most important trading centres in northern Vietnam. The ride takes us through peaceful countryside, scenic mountain roads, and quiet rural areas before reaching this busy border city near China.

Thanks to its strategic location and relatively short distance from Hanoi, Lang Son has become one of the largest trading hubs between Vietnam and China. The city is well known for its lively markets and cross-border commerce, offering a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of a border town.

You will also have some free time to explore local markets and shop for affordable Chinese goods, including phone accessories, chargers, power banks, toys, and other everyday products. It is a fun cultural experience and a unique contrast to the remote mountain landscapes we have enjoyed throughout the journey.

Overnight in a hotel in Lang Son.

Day 11: Lang Son – Hanoi (~150 km, ~3 h). End of Scenic Ha Giang Dirt Bike Tour.

If the weather is favourable, we continue the Scenic Ha Giang Dirt Bike Tour by heading south to Mau Son Mountain, located about 30 km from Lang Son and rising to an altitude of 1,541 metres above sea level. This peaceful mountain area offers fresh air, beautiful scenery, and a chance to experience the traditional lifestyle of local Dao ethnic communities.

In the morning, we take a relaxing walk around Mau Son, visit our Dao friends, and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of this remote highland destination. Afterward, we ride back down to Lang Son for lunch before beginning our final journey back to Hanoi.

On the way to Hanoi, we have opportunities to stop at traditional villages, visit historic Buddhist pagodas, and discover more of the local culture. Alternatively, we can choose quieter back roads to avoid the busy Highway 1B, making the final ride more enjoyable and scenic.

We arrive back in Hanoi at around 4:00 pm, finishing this unforgettable 11-day Scenic Ha Giang Dirt Bike Tour before the evening rush hour. After thousands of kilometres through remote mountains, hidden trails, and ethnic villages, you will return with memories of one of the best Vietnam motorcycle adventures.
