NORTHEAST VIETNAM MOTORCYCLE ADVENTURE
Introduction to the Northeast Vietnam Motorcycle Adventure
The Northeast Vietnam Motorcycle Adventure takes you through one of the most spectacular regions of Northern Vietnam, where breathtaking mountain scenery, winding roads, and rich ethnic cultures combine to create an unforgettable riding experience. Although the mountains are generally lower than those in the northwest, the region is home to some of Vietnam’s most iconic natural attractions, including the majestic Cao Bang Mountains, the tranquil Ba Be Lake, the magnificent Ban Gioc Waterfall, and the legendary Highway 4.
Along the journey, you will meet the welcoming Tay and Nung ethnic communities, enjoy authentic local cuisine, and experience the warm hospitality that makes this region so special. With a combination of scenic paved roads, quiet countryside routes, and cultural highlights, this Northeast Vietnam Motorcycle Adventure is suitable for both experienced and less experienced riders looking to explore northern Vietnam at a comfortable pace.
For riders seeking a greater challenge, we can extend the adventure to Bao Lac and continue to Cao Bang via more demanding mountain roads and rugged backcountry tracks. Around Ban Gioc Waterfall, several optional off-road trails offer exciting riding through remote landscapes. These advanced sections are recommended for riders with intermediate to advanced riding skills, providing an even more rewarding off-road motorcycle adventure in Vietnam.

Northeast Vietnam Motorcycle Adventure from Hanoi Itinerary
Day 1: Hanoi – Vu Linh. ~180 km, ~8 h.
Today marks the beginning of your 7-day Northeast Vietnam Motorcycle Adventure. Before leaving Hanoi, we provide a comprehensive safety briefing covering Vietnamese traffic rules, riding techniques, and the guide’s hand signals to ensure smooth communication throughout the journey. We normally depart at around 9:30 AM, after the morning rush hour, for a safer and more relaxed start.
The ride to Vu Linh takes approximately eight hours, including regular stops for sightseeing, photographs, refreshments, and lunch. The route follows mostly well-paved roads, making it an enjoyable first day suitable for riders of varying experience levels. As we leave the busy city behind, the scenery gradually changes to peaceful countryside, rolling hills, and picturesque rural landscapes, offering a wonderful introduction to motorcycle touring in northern Vietnam.
By late afternoon, we arrive in Vu Linh Village, located beside the beautiful Thac Ba Lake, where we are warmly welcomed by our Dao ethnic friends. Their genuine hospitality is legendary, and spending the evening in a traditional local home provides an authentic cultural experience rarely found on ordinary tourist routes. Enjoy a delicious home-cooked dinner, relax with your hosts, and experience the friendliness that makes this region one of the highlights of the Northeast Vietnam Motorcycle Adventure.
Day 2: Vu Linh – Ba Be. ~190 km, ~6 h.
Today’s ride takes you from Vu Linh to Ba Be National Park via Tuyen Quang Province, following scenic roads through peaceful countryside and picturesque mountain landscapes. The route is almost entirely well-paved, making for a comfortable and enjoyable day of riding. The final 10 kilometres, however, remain rough, narrow, and bumpy, adding a touch of adventure as you approach one of northern Vietnam’s most beautiful natural areas.
By late afternoon, we arrive at Pac Ngoi Village, a traditional Tay ethnic village nestled on the edge of Ba Be Lake and surrounded by the lush forests of Ba Be National Park. Here, our longtime host, Mr. Sao, warmly welcomes us into his traditional stilt house. Enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal, experience genuine Tay hospitality, and relax in the peaceful atmosphere of this charming village before another exciting day on your Northeast Vietnam Motorcycle Adventure.
Day 3: Explore Ba Be National Park.
After two rewarding days of riding, today is a chance to slow down and discover the natural beauty of Ba Be National Park. Instead of spending the day on the motorcycle, we explore the region by traditional boat, cruising across the peaceful Ba Be Lake and along its scenic river. If your visit coincides with a local market day, we also have the opportunity to experience the vibrant atmosphere of a traditional ethnic market, where local communities gather to trade fresh produce and handmade goods.
Along the way, we stop at a beautiful waterfall, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim surrounded by pristine forest. Lunch is prepared near the spectacular Dau Dang Waterfall by our local friend, affectionately known as “Ong Pirate,” who welcomes us with authentic regional dishes in a truly unique setting.
After lunch, we may visit a nearby Tay village and a small local school, where you can gain a deeper understanding of everyday life in this remote part of northern Vietnam. In the evening, we return to Mr. Sao’s traditional stilt house in Pac Ngoi Village for another night of warm hospitality and delicious home-cooked food.
If time and energy permit, there is also the option of a short motorcycle ride into the surrounding forest. Depending on your riding experience, your guide can choose between sealed mountain roads or more challenging off-road tracks, allowing you to tailor the adventure to your skill level.

Day 4: Ba Be – Cao Bang. ~170 km, ~8 h.
Today’s ride takes you deeper into the spectacular mountains of Cao Bang Province, one of the highlights of the Northeast Vietnam Motorcycle Adventure. The route follows scenic mountain roads, crossing several beautiful mountain passes that offer breathtaking panoramic views over the valleys, forests, and limestone peaks of northeastern Vietnam.
Although the road is mostly well-paved and enjoyable to ride, it features numerous blind corners and winding sections that require careful attention. We ride at a relaxed pace, making frequent stops to admire the scenery, take photographs, and enjoy refreshments along the way. Including breaks for coffee, sightseeing, and lunch, the journey takes approximately eight hours.
By late afternoon, we arrive in Cao Bang City, where we check into a comfortable hotel overlooking the picturesque Bang Giang River. After a rewarding day on the road, you can relax, explore the riverside, or enjoy dinner featuring local specialties before preparing for another unforgettable day of motorcycle touring in northeastern Vietnam.
Day 5: Cao Bang – Ban Gioc Waterfalls – Quang Uyen. ~130 km, ~2 h.
After obtaining the necessary permission from the border police, we ride through some of the most spectacular scenery in Cao Bang Province to reach the magnificent Ban Gioc Waterfall, the largest and most impressive waterfall in Vietnam. The journey follows scenic mountain roads lined with limestone cliffs, lush valleys, and traditional villages, making this one of the highlights of the Northeast Vietnam Motorcycle Adventure.
Weather and river conditions permitting, you can even swim close to the base of the 50-metre-high Ban Gioc Waterfall, where the cascading water creates an unforgettable natural spectacle. The falls are at their most dramatic during the rainy season (June to October), when the increased water flow transforms them into one of Southeast Asia’s most breathtaking natural wonders.
After exploring the waterfall, we continue riding for about one hour to the peaceful village of Quang Hoa, nestled within a beautiful mountain basin and home to the Nung An ethnic people. This quiet rural setting offers an authentic glimpse into traditional life in northeastern Vietnam.
Tonight, we stay with our local friends in a welcoming family home. Our hostess is renowned for her outstanding home-cooked meals, prepared with fresh local ingredients and traditional recipes. Many riders consider this authentic dinner to be among the finest culinary experiences of the entire Vietnam motorcycle tour, providing the perfect ending to another memorable day on the road.
Day 6: Quang Hoa – Lang Son. ~150 km, ~5 h.
Today we leave the peaceful mountain village of Quang Hoa and ride towards Lang Son, one of the most important border trading cities in northern Vietnam. Located close to the Vietnam–China border and within easy reach of Hanoi, Lang Son has long been a major commercial hub and a gateway for trade between the two countries.
The journey continues through beautiful northeastern Vietnam mountain scenery, with winding roads, rural villages, and dramatic limestone landscapes along the way. After several days of exploring remote areas, this ride offers a fascinating contrast between the quiet countryside and the lively border-city atmosphere.

In Lang Son, you will have time to explore local markets and experience the busy trading culture of this unique border region. It is also a great opportunity to purchase affordable everyday items such as phone chargers, power banks, small electronics, toys, and other local products.
Tonight, we stay overnight at a comfortable hotel in Lang Son City, enjoying a well-deserved rest before the final riding day of your Northeast Vietnam Motorcycle Adventure.
Day 7: Lang Son – Hanoi. ~150 km, ~3 h. End of Northeast Vietnam Motorcycle Adventure.
If weather conditions are favorable, we begin the final day by riding up to Mau Son Mountain, located about 30km from Lang Son and rising to an elevation of 1,541 metres above sea level. This beautiful mountain area offers cool fresh air, spectacular views, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it a perfect final highlight of your 7-day Northeast Vietnam Motorcycle Adventure.
In the morning, we take a relaxed walk around Mau Son, enjoy the mountain scenery, and visit our Dao ethnic friends to learn more about their traditional lifestyle and culture. After this memorable cultural experience, we ride back down the mountain to Lang Son City for lunch.
The afternoon ride takes us back towards Hanoi through a mix of scenic countryside roads, traditional villages, and historic Buddhist pagodas, where we can stop for short visits along the way. Whenever possible, we avoid the busy Highway 1B by taking quieter back roads, allowing you to enjoy a more peaceful and authentic riding experience.
We arrive back in Hanoi at around 4:00 PM, comfortably before the evening rush hour. This marks the end of your unforgettable 7-day Northeast Vietnam Motorcycle Tour, a journey filled with dramatic landscapes, ethnic cultures, winding mountain roads, and unforgettable memories on two wheels.
