Introduction to the Roof Roads to Sapa Motorbike Tour
The Hoang Lien Mountain Range, home to Fansipan (the Roof of Indochina), offers some of the best riding in Northern Vietnam. With cool mountain weather, spectacular terraced rice fields, scenic mountain roads, and colourful ethnic minority villages, this 5-day Hanoi to Sapa motorbike tour is perfect for experienced riders.
Although Sapa is a popular destination, the roads leading there and back remain quiet, scenic, and full of unforgettable views. Ride through breathtaking landscapes and, if you visit during the rice harvest season, enjoy the mountains covered in brilliant golden terraces.

Sapa Motorbike Tour from Hanoi Itinerary
Day 1: Hanoi – Nghia Lo. ~180 km, ~7 h.
Your Hanoi to Sapa motorbike tour begins by leaving the busy capital behind and following quiet, fully sealed roads along the scenic Red River. Ride through Son Tay before crossing Trung Ha Bridge, where the countryside gradually replaces the city and the journey into Northern Vietnam’s mountains begins.
Continue towards Thu Cuc, climbing into the lower slopes of the magnificent Hoang Lien Mountain Range. Along the way, you’ll pass peaceful farming villages, lush rice fields, tea plantations, and beautiful rural landscapes that offer a perfect introduction to the region.
The road then ascends Khe Pass, the first mountain pass of the tour and the gateway to the Hoang Lien range, home to Fansipan, the famous Roof of Indochina. From here, enjoy winding mountain roads, fresh air, and increasingly spectacular scenery.
The afternoon ride follows quiet back roads through Ba Khe before arriving in Nghia Lo. Nearly half of today’s route features enjoyable mountain riding with sweeping bends, light traffic, and beautiful valley views, making it an ideal first day for experienced motorcyclists.
Overnight in a comfortable hotel in Nghia Lo.
Day 2: Nghia Lo – Than Uyen. ~140 km, ~6 h.
Today’s ride takes you deep into the spectacular Mu Cang Chai mountain region, following one of the most scenic and winding roads in Northern Vietnam. Surrounded by rugged peaks, dense forests, and endless terraced rice fields, this is one of the highlights of the Hanoi to Sapa motorbike tour.
Cross the impressive Mu Cang Chai massif, whose mountains rise almost as high as Fansipan, the Roof of Indochina. From the highest points, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over valleys, mountain ridges, and some of Vietnam’s most beautiful rice terraces – a paradise for photographers and nature lovers alike.
After descending into Than Uyen, there is time to ride through nearby ethnic minority villages, where you can experience the peaceful lifestyle and rich culture of the local people before ending another unforgettable day in the mountains.
